How to verify a French company (SIREN/SIRET) with an API

What SIREN and SIRET are

Every company in France has a SIREN: a 9-digit number that INSEE gives it when it enters the Sirene directory. It stays the same for the whole life of the company. Each of its establishments (head office, shop, warehouse) also has a SIRET: the SIREN followed by a 5-digit establishment number, 14 digits in all. The French VAT number is built from the SIREN too: FR, a 2-digit key, then the SIREN.

Where the official data comes from

The French state publishes its register of companies as open data in the Annuaire des Entreprises. It combines INSEE's Sirene directory with the national register of companies (RNE) kept by INPI, under the Licence Ouverte / Etalab 2.0. Fuentio reads it through the official API Recherche d'entreprises and keeps the register's own wording.

Companies and establishments that asked for their data not to be published aren't shown by the source, so Fuentio can't show them either.

status is the status the register gives, and the date it applies from.
legal_form keeps the French label and adds the international ISO 20275 code.
activity keeps the NAF code and label, plus the European NACE code and an English label.
provenance says where the record comes from, under which licence, and when we last checked it.
