UK companies, from Companies House

Every company on the Companies House register, checked the same way as in France and Spain: an outcome, the reasons, the source, the date and a proof code. Dissolved companies included.

The source

Every UK answer comes from Companies House, the United Kingdom's registrar of companies, through the sources the API lists, with their update rhythm as it states it:

The government describes them on its data products page. Each company also has its own page on the official register, Find and update company information.

  • Licence: Open Government Licence v3.0, which allows commercial reuse. The attribution it asks for, word for word: “Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.”
  • As the API states it on every answer: Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0 (Companies House).

What an answer covers

  • Every company on the register, dissolved ones included: company number, registered name and previous names.
  • Company type and status in Companies House's own words; an open insolvency procedure is never “verified”
  • Incorporation and cessation dates; registered office address.
  • Activity: SIC codes.
  • Accounts and confirmation statement: when they are due, when they were last made up, and whether they are overdue.
  • Insolvency cases: their type, number and dates.
  • Charges: how many, their classification, status and dates.
  • Filings: the latest 25, dated, each with our own label from its type code.

On top of the record, the same as for France and Spain: an outcome (verified, partial or unverified), the reasons, the source and the date, a proof code anyone can check, and monitoring.

What it doesn't cover

  • No people: no directors, no persons with significant control (PSC), no owners, no insolvency practitioners, no one a charge favours. The registered office's “care of” line, which can name a person, is never stored.
  • No filing texts: they name officers. A filing shows its date and our own label only.

No person's name is ever served: not a director's, not an owner's, not an insolvency practitioner's.

Company numbers

8 characters. As the API describes them: “Companies House registration number, 8 characters: 8 digits for England and Wales (zero-padded, e.g. 00445790), or a 2-letter prefix and 6 digits (SC Scotland, NI Northern Ireland, OC limited liability partnership…). No check digit.” For example 00445790, or SC… in Scotland, NI… in Northern Ireland, OC… for a limited liability partnership.
